1968 was a tumultuous year. The Vietnam War raged on. The Tet Offensive left us reeling. Then Martin Luther King was assassinated. It was a spring without hope, until I heard Al Lowenstein speak at an anti-war rally. My essay, “Pledge of Allegiance,” explores being a teen volunteer for Lowenstein’s campaign, believing that one by one we could change the world, and a kiss by a pond that changed mine.
